The “big
one” for 1993. Gross floor area
13,500m2. Building cost FJ$15M.
Our
design approach was influenced by client requirements, by the site, by climatic
and cultural considerations. The
look for the complex deliberately sets out to contrast with its surroundings and
thereby achieving its architectural and marketable identity as a polished
refined and elegant artefact.
Main
design elements are: A silver and a
bronze pod, both 5 storeys, consisting of 3 octagonal modules each. A retail “plinth” at plaza level grounding the building.
An atrium link comprising of a “slot” and a “drum” providing a
dynamic focus between the 2 pods. A
continuous banded, gridded exterior with windows on various faces reflecting
orientation and site constraints. A
sculptural “cornice” line capping the composition. Entrance “mouths” derived from indigenous motifs.
